About Step Ahead

Who Runs Step Ahead?

TuteeOur well-qualified Director, George Hawkins, with varied school headship experience in both the state and private sectors, manages the organisation, selects the tutors and is readily available to clients and parents personally or by telephone. He is not purely an administrator, but leads from the front by tutoring a wide range of clients himself. For instance, he has an outstanding record of helping youngsters gain places in leading independent schools. It is highly recommended that any prospective client should telephone (01383 - 624599) and ask to speak to our Director. For directions click here

Who Are Your Tutors?

Nearly four hundred tutors have registered with us over the past decade or so, the vast majority being fully qualified General Teaching Council-registered teachers (i.e. people you would find teaching in Scottish schools (state and independent), colleges and universities.

A small group are retired, vastly experienced teachers who have held promoted and senior posts.

Most teach currently in establishments in Fife, Edinburgh, the Lothians and East Central Scotland, although we do have teachers in other parts of Scotland. Some have become part-time or full-time tutors. All have gone through the necessary checks to allow them to work with children and young people.

Many are considered specialists in a specific subject e.g. in physics or history, whilst others have more of a generalist background and can offer a wider range e.g. primary or sciences.

We also have tutors who have outstanding academic and/or professional qualifications and expertise in curricular and more diverse subjects.

Can A Client Be Taught By A Teacher From The Same School?

STEP AHEAD has a rule that a client will not be given a tutor who works in the same school or educational establishment as the client, or who knows the client or his or her family.

Partnerships among Parents, Tutors and Step Ahead?

We believe that it is important that the youngster sees the tutor and his or her parents working in harness in the educational process. At the end of some sessions, on a fairly regular basis, tutors will give an indication to parents of progress, attainment and expectations. Should parents have particular queries, these should be directed to the tutor at the beginning of a session or by telephone at other times. General queries can be dealt with by contacting the STEP AHEAD Office.

There are occasional situations where, through no-one's fault, the relationship between a client and a tutor does not work out, and we reserve you the right to contact us (or us to contact you) to discuss making appropriate changes.
